The most important river of Georgia is Mtkvari (Kura river). The total length of the river is 1,515 kilometers, in Georgia the length of the river is 400 kilometers.

The protection day of the Mtkvari river is June 2nd. This day was established in 1999 by the coalition “Kura-Araks”.  This day is celebrated in Georgia, as well as in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

National Environmental Agency performs regular quality monitoring of the river Mtkvari in 19 spots monthly and in 33 spots quarterly.

On 2nd June 2020 water samples were taken from the Mtkvari river. In 2021, representatives of the EIEC of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia met with students from grades V–VI of Tbilisi Public School No. 69 and trained them on the importance of water resources and the actions needed to protect them.
