On June 30th, and July 1st , we conducted a two-day advocacy training for the participants of the “Eco Centre” Academy.

The training was held in Kachreti as part of the project “Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Youth-Led Initiatives for Democratic Governance and Policy Engagement” supported by USAID.

During the two-day training, young people gained theoretical knowledge about the environmental challenges facing our city and practical skills regarding forms of citizen participation and engagement.

The first day of the training was devoted to discussing air pollution: we reviewed types of pollution, main pollutants, and primary threats; we also learned how to check air quality on the portal air.gov.ge, and discussed the connection between air pollution and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. At the end of the day, we talked about opportunities for citizen engagement at the local level. After this, participants engaged in a practical exercise and presented specific problems, their causes, and consequences based on problem tree analysis.

We started the second day of the training by discussing the impact of air pollution on human health and shared with the youth the dangers that our health faces/may face under polluted conditions. The subsequent training sessions were dedicated to discussing mechanisms of local citizen engagement, and in the practical part, we introduced participants to the mechanism and method of requesting public information. Additionally, in the practical part, we analyzed interest groups related to the problem and their activities.

At the end of the training, we discussed with the Academy members how to involve young people in environmental activism and agreed on future plans for the academy.
